Mythology

In Greek Mythology, The Underworld is the kingdom of the dead and ruled over by Hades. The underworld is surrounded by 5 rivers, The Acheron (river of woe), The Cocytus (river of lamentation), The Phlegethon (river of fire), The Styx (river of unbreakable oath by which the gods swear), and The Lethe (river of forgetfulness). According to the greeks, when you die you are lead to the gate of The Underworld by Hermes, were you must cross a river which is ferried by Charon. Only those who were buried with a coins are there lips may pay the fare to cross. Once you enter The Underworld you cannot leave.

A Soyuz spacecraft with two Americans and a Russian on board lifted off from Kazakhstan on Sunday for the international space station. The Soyuz TMA-13 capsule carrying American computer game millionaire Richard Garriott soared into a clear sky atop a Russian rocket as the latest paying space traveler's family watched from a viewing platform. Also aboard were U.S. astronaut Michael Fincke and Russian cosmonaut Yuri Lonchakov. The rocket lifted off on schedule at 1:01 p.m. local time (3 a.m. EDT), sending an orange flare behind it as it streaked upward. The craft entered orbit about 10 minutes later. "I'm elated, elated," said Richard Garriott's father, Owen, a former U.S. astronaut who is the first American to see his child follow in his footsteps and reach space. "They're in orbit, that's good." Garriott's mother Eve and his girlfriend, Kelly Miller, shed tears of joy and relief at the successful launch. "This is cool, this is cool," Miller said. The Soyuz is to dock Tuesday with the international space station, where Garriott will spend about 10 days conducting experiments and photographing the Earth before returning in a Soyuz capsule with cosmonaut Yuri Volkov, whose father also traveled to space. Garriott, a Texan who made his fortune designing computer fantasy games, dreamed of space as a child but learned as a youth that he could not become a NASA astronaut because of his poor eyesight. He paid a reported US$30 million for his voyage. "I'm really happy for him. It's one of the things he's wanted to do most in his life. I spent a lot of time listening to him about when he goes up in space," Miller said. "He's like a kid in a candy shop," she said. "And I already want him to come back."

This Current event is excellent for the Archetype the underworld because it represents travelling into the unknown. It relates to the Germanic Mythology by the space shuttle being the boat that transports you into the afterlife of something new and different.

Poetry

THE ROAD NOT TAKEN BY Robert Frost
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I couldTo where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair,And having perhaps the better claim,Because it was grassy and wanted wear;Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black.Oh, I kept the first for another day!Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence:Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.

This Poem by Robert Frost represents the travelling into the unknown. It does not directly define the afterlife as The Underworld, but it shows us the path to the afterlife no matter what it may be. When it says "Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally layIn leaves no step had trodden black." The black could represent hell and the underworld which he is trying to avoid.

Theres a lady whos sure All that glitters is gold And shes buying a stairway to heaven. When she gets there she knows If the stores are all closed With a word she can get what she came for.Ooh, ooh, and shes buying a stairway to heaven.Theres a sign on the wall But she wants to be sure cause you know sometimes words have two meanings. In a tree by the brook Theres a songbird who sings,Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven.Ooh, it makes me wonder,Ooh, it makes me wonder.Theres a feeling I get When I look to the west, And my spirit is crying for leaving. In my thoughts I have seen Rings of smoke through the trees,And the voices of those who standing looking.Ooh, it makes me wonder,Ooh, it really makes me wonder. And its whispered that soon If we all call the tune Then the piper will lead us to reason. And a new day will dawn For those who stand long And the forests will echo with laughter. If theres a bustle in your hedgerow Dont be alarmed now, Its just a spring clean for the may queen.Yes, there are two paths you can go by But in the long run Theres still time to change the road youre on. And it makes me wonder.Your head is humming and it wont go In case you dont know, The pipers calling you to join him, Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow, And did you knowYour stairway lies on the whispering wind. And as we wind on down the road Our shadows taller than our soul. There walks a lady we all know Who shines white light and wants to show How evrything still turns to gold. And if you listen very hard The tune will come to you at last. When all are one and one is all To be a rock and not to roll.
Stairway To Heaven by Led Zeppelin is excellent in representing the Archetype The Afterlife. In shows the stairway as the path to the afterlife and the unknown. In the song it says "And my spirit is crying for leaving." this represents death and the spirit leaving the body to the afterlife. Also it says "If theres a bustle in your hedgerow Dont be alarmed now, Its just a spring clean for the may queen." Spring represents life and rebirth and when it says "clean" it could mean that life is being renewed and moving to something new. It also says in the song "The pipers calling you to join him" the piper could represent Hermese, who in greek mythology is the one who leads the souls to the gates of the Underworld.
